Good Afternoon,
Police are warning of the dangers of swimming in open waters as the warm weather continues.
This warning follows a number of reports about people swimming in lakes, quarries and other water sources over the past few days.
As the hot weather continues during the summer, officers from the Rossendale Policing team will be patrolling the area to warn of the risks involved and other hidden dangers which include strong currents and mud banks or items under the water which a swimmer can become caught on.
We want to let swimmers know that the water may have hidden hazards and potential for serious injury or death.
Reservoirs are not designed for swimming and present risks such as cold water shock, strong and hidden currents and hidden debris.
Cold Water Shock: Even in summer, reservoir water can be icy cold, leading to cold water shock, which can incapacitate swimmers.
Hidden Hazards: Reservoirs contain unseen dangers like strong currents, underwater machinery, and debris that can trap swimmers.
Depth and Banks: The depth of reservoirs can be difficult to judge, and steep sides can make it hard to get out.
Contaminated Water: Untreated reservoir water may contain contaminants that can cause illness.
Illegal Activity: Swimming in reservoirs is often prohibited and may result in fines or even prison sentences.
If someone is in in trouble: DO NOT ATTEMPT A RESCUE YOURSELF; CALL 999 ASK FOR THE FIRE SERVICE OR COASTGUARD.
Please be safe and enjoy your summer!
Kind Regards
